There are good telemetry tools for sim racing. But AI changed what software can do, and none of these tools picked that up. So we started from zero and built Apex Racing.
Why start from zero
Starting from zero has a price. Other tools collected laps for years, and we did not. Good reference laps need a lot of data, and we have to catch up there.
But a new start also lets us build the foundation for what comes next, not for what was possible ten years ago. Telemetry alone is a pile of numbers. It gets useful when something understands the game it comes from.
What we built so far
We model each game. Every sim sends different data, in different units, with different gaps. F1 sends the fuel in kilograms, Le Mans Ultimate in litres. Automobilista 2 sends the positions of the cars, but no gaps between them. iRacing sends no live position of the other cars at all. We write this knowledge down per game, per car class and per track, and the analysis uses it. An answer about your fuel or your tyres has to fit the game that you drive.
We keep a database of the cars, the classes and the tracks of each game. A track is more than a line: we name its corners and split it into mini-sectors, so a comparison can say where you lose time, corner by corner.
And we built features that we have not seen anywhere else:
- A coaching report for each session, like the notes of a race engineer.
- An MCP server, so you can ask the AI agent of your choice about your laps.
- A race comparison that puts you and your friends side by side, lap by lap.
- A Pit Wall that replays a race like the broadcast.
- Hosted Automobilista 2 servers for leagues, set up for each round of the calendar.
We also learned a lot about how MCP and AI agents can help a driver. We think this is only the start. Sim racing can get much more immersive than it is today, and that is where we want to go.
Where you can help: track outlines
To tell you where you are on the track (how close you get to the apex, how much of the exit kerb you use), we need the real edges of the track. We get them from outline laps: a driver drives one lap along the left edge and one along the right edge.
In the p0 tray menu, pick Left Outline or Right Outline, then drive one lap along that edge. Each outline that you record makes the analysis better for everyone who drives that track. The track coverage board shows which tracks are mapped.
What we leave out on purpose
A video of your lap next to the telemetry is useful, and we know that people want it. But every recording tool that we tried costs frames and resources while you drive. A tool for your driving must not make your driving worse. As long as there is no better way to record, we leave it out.
What comes next
Setups. Setups will be part of the subscription. Not one setup for everyone: a setup that fits you. A driver who races once a week in a Sunday league with friends needs a different car than an esports driver who lives on the meta of a game.
The iOS app. You can do a lot from the cockpit without the website. This gets interesting in team events, for example in Le Mans Ultimate: when you swap drivers, you change from driver to race engineer. Then you want to help your teammate during the race. How much fuel do we add? Do we change the tyres? How many sets are left?
Who we are
We are sim racers. Apex Racing is a grassroots project, built for our own hobby and for our own league: fathers, brothers and friends who meet once or twice a week to race and have fun.
We built the tool that we wanted for ourselves. If you race like we do, we think that you want it too.
